Incident Details: Police Officer Anton Zaposky was assigned to Central Station.
On July 27, 1934, Officer Zapolsky and his partner, Officer Leonard McPhail, heard the sound of gunfire. The officers were unaware that the gunshots they heard were intended for two other police officers. When Officer Zapolsky and Officer McPhail arrived at the scene, the car thief, Charles Lewis, opened fire; striking Officer Zapolsky in the abdomen. Officer John Fogarty, an assisting officer, shot and killed Lewis. Officer Zapolsky was transported to Henrotin Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on July 30. A civilian was also injured during the incident.

  • My grandfather was CPD Officer John Fogarty, the assisting officer in this case. He died when I was young, I never knew this story. I wish I knew more about his service. I’m sorry Officer Zapolsky made the ultimate sacrifice protecting his community. God bless and protect our police officers.
