On April 25, 2016, Officers Eddie Okon and Gerardo Rivera were working Beat 1013 in full uniform and in a marked CPD vehicle when they observed an individual standing with other known gang members near 24th and Trumbull. The officers observed the individual securing and holding a bulge in his waistband and they felt his actions were consistent with someone possessing a weapon. Okon and Rivera approached the group and attempted to conduct an investigatory stop at which time the offender in question fled on foot. As the offender fled, he removed a handgun from his waistband and fired a shot, striking Officer Okon in the right shoulder. The offender continued to flee and was eventually taken into custody after Officer Rivera chased him down and deployed his Taser. Officer Okon was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he was treated and released for a gun shot wound to the upper right shoulder. The offender’s weapon was recovered and found to be loaded with eight .45 caliber rounds.
