Incident & Biographic Details


Patrolman Edgar Abbo DeCuir, Jr., Star #4461, aged 49 years, was a 20 year, 8 month, 5 day veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 2nd District – Wentworth.

On December 22, 1972, Patrolman DeCuir was working in the 2nd District lockup. While processing a prisoner, he was assaulted and a struggle ensued. The prisoner was subdued, but Officer DeCuir became ill and suffered a heart attack, dying before any medical attention could be summoned.

Officer DeCuir was waked Griffin Funeral Home located at 3232 South Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. He was laid to rest on December 27, 1972 in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum, 3801 West 87th Street, Evergreen Park, Illinois. His grave is located in Grave 8, Lot 25, Block 102, Section W.

Patrolman Edgar Abbo DeCuir, Jr. born August 16, 1923, received his Probationary Appointment to the Chicago Police Department on April 17, 1952. On August 15, 1952, Officer DeCuir reported his star, Star #4454, as lost and was issued a new replacement star, Star #4461. Upon his death, his replacement star was not retired and was reissued to Patrolman John A. Cruz on February 19, 1973.

Officer DeCuir was survived by his wife, Mattie (nee Marshall). He was preceded in death by his parents: Edgar Abbo, Sr. and Mary (nee Jackson) and siblings: Earnie, Herbert and Winfield.
