Incident & Biographic Details

Patrolman Edward Joseph McGuire, Star #1513, aged 50 years, was a 21 year, 11 month, 22 day veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 5th District – Wabash.

On February 24, 1928, at 8:40 p.m., Officer McGuire was on duty inside the police station when he a call came in reporting crazed man, Paul Dobine, who had been threatening everyone he met with a Luger automatic pistol. Officer McGuire and Patrolmen Joseph Maurovic and Maurice Quinn, got into a patrol wagon and responded to the scene. Upon arrival, the officers located Dobine in front of 4523 South Vincennes Avenue. As Officer McGuire confronted Dobine and attempted to place him under arrest, Dobine opened fire. Officer McGuire was struck in the head and collapsed to the ground. Officers Maurovich and Quinn then engaged the gunman in a close range firefight. After the smoke cleared, Dobine lay dead on the sidewalk. Officer McGuire was transported to Chicago Hospital where he was pronounced dead an hour after arrival on February 24, 1928.

Officer McGuire was waked at his residence located at 6840 South Sangamon Street. His funeral mass was held at St. Brendan Catholic Church located at 6714 South Racine Avenue. He was laid to rest on February 28, 1928 in Mount Carmel Cemetery, 1400 South Wolf Road, Hillside, Illinois. His grave is located in Grave 4, Lot 17, Block 4, Section S.

Patrolman Edward Joseph McGuire, born January 16, 1878, received his Probationary Appointment to the Chicago Police Department on March 2, 1906.

Officer McGuire was survived by his wife, Bridget; children: Edward J., Martin F. and Mary C. and siblings: Anna, Mary and Mrs. James Radigan.
