Patrolman Eugene A. Hulton, Star #1987, aged 55 years, was a 20 year, 1 month, 7 day veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to District 3 – South Wabash.
On April 24, 1926, Officer Hulton and three other officers, Patrolmen Frank Ballou, Charles Frabel and William Philips, were responding to the scene of an armed robbery. Their squad car was traveling on South 48th Street and when it entered the intersection a street trolley traveling Southbound on Indiana Avenue struck it. Officer Hulton sustained severe internal injuries and two fractured legs in the crash. All four officers were transported to Washington Park Hospital. Officer Hulton, the most severely injured, lingered in the hospital for two days before he succumbed to his injuries on April 26, 1926. The three other officers only suffered minor injuries and made full recoveries.
The motorman, Frank Sullivan, was held by the Coroner to the Grand Jury. The October 1926 Grand Jury returned a No Bill.
Officer Hulton was waked at his residence located at 6612 South Michigan Avenue, his funeral mass was also held at his residence. He was laid to rest on April 29, 1926 in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 6001 West 111th Street, Alsip, Illinois. His grave is located in Grave 1, Lot SS19, Block 4, Section 6.
Patrolman Eugene A. Hulton, born December 19, 1870, received his Probationary Appointment to the Chicago Police Department on March 19, 1906. He earned 1 Credible Mention during his career.
Officer Hulton was a member of the Chicago Policemen’s Benevolent & Welfare Association. He was a member of the Policeman’s Benevolent Association. He was survived by his wife, Elizabeth (nee Kane) and son, Eugene J.
