Incident & Biographic Details


Patrolman Henry John Lange, Star #3199, aged 37 years, was a 9 year, 7 month, 11 day veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Traffic Division.

On December 21, 1928, Officer Lange was patrolling on horseback at 333 South Franklin Street. Officer Lange, who was mounted, was directing traffic and observed an automobile violating a parking ordinance. He leaned over to question the driver, which caused him to lose his balance and fall off his mount. Officer Lange fell to the street and hit his head on the cobblestone pavement. He was transported to St. Luke Hospital where he was treated for a fractured skull and died two weeks later on January 3, 1929.

Officer Lange was waked at his residence located at 3353 West Evergreen Avenue, his funeral mass was also held at his residence. He was laid to rest on January 7, 1929 in Acacia Park Cemetery, 7800 West Irving Park Road, Norridge, Illinois.

Patrolman Henry John Lange, born April 6, 1891, received his Probationary Appointment to the Chicago Police Department on May 23, 1919.

Officer Lange was survived by his wife, Mae (nee Ryan), age 43; children; Betty Jane, age 10 months and George Henry, age 18; mother, Augusta Albertine (nee Zahlmann) and siblings: Anna Jennerick, August, Ernest, Frank, Freda Lembke, Herman and Minnie Meyer. He was preceded in death by his father, Johann Jochen David Carl Lange.
