On July 2, 1972, Officer Scannell and Patrolmen George Alvarado and Marion Sykes responded to a call regarding a drunk and disorderly customer at The Rush Up lounge located at 909 North Rush Street. Following the struggle Officer Scannell became ill and collapsed. Officers Alvarado and Sykes attempted to revive Officer Scannell by performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but were unable to save him.
