Incident & Biographic Details

Patrolman John P. Furlong, Star #567, aged 33 years, was a 4 year, 7 month, 23 day veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to District 13, 7th Precinct – Deering.

On October 25, 1915, at 12:00 a.m., Officer Furlong was using a call box at Lyman and Bonfield Streets to check in with his supervisor. At 12:15 a.m., Joseph Jazicak of 2912 South Throop Street found Officer Furlong lying in a pool of blood and unconscious in front of 2901 South Throop Street. Officer Furlong was transported to People’s Hospital with a skull fracture. Before lapsing into a coma, he informed a nurse that four neighborhood gangsters had attacked him from behind. Officer Furlong passed away two days later on October 27, 1915.

On November 11, 1915, the Coroner returned an open verdict. The offenders were never identified.

Officer Furlong was waked at his residence located at 3302 South Archer Avenue. He was laid to rest October 30, 1915 in Calvary Cemetery, 301 Chicago Avenue, Evanston, Illinois. His grave is located in Grave –, Lot 37, Block 4, Section K.

Patrolman John P. Furlong, born March 15, 1882, received his Probationary Appointment to the Chicago Police Department on March 4, 1911.

Officer Furlong was survived by his wife, son, parents, brother and two sisters.
