Incident & Biographic Details
Patrolman Thomas Joseph Carroll, Jr., Star #1617, aged 54 years, was a 26 year, 4 month, 21 day veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 34th District – Albany Park.
On March 20, 1949, Officer Thomas Carroll and his partner, Patrolman Henry Kosinski, transported a paralytic stroke victim to Cook County Hospital in their squadrol. The elevators at the hospital were out of order and the officers carried the patient up a flight of stairs. After reaching the 2nd floor Officer Carroll began to complain of chest pains and sat down in a nearby chair. Shortly after sitting down Officer Carroll had a fatal heart attack. He was transported to Cook County Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival on March 20, 1949.
Officer Carroll was waked at Jennings-Peoples Funeral Home located at 5018-20 West Chicago Avenue. His funeral mass was held at St. Angela Catholic Church located at 5758 West Potomac Avenue. He was laid to rest on March 23, 1949 in All Saints Catholic Cemetery, 700 North River Road, Des Plaines, Illinois. His grave is located in Grave 2, Lot N5′ 8″ 654, Block 18, Section 7.
Patrolman Thomas Joseph Carroll, Jr., born September 3, 1894, received his Probationary Appointment to the Chicago Police Department on October 27, 1922. Prior to joining the Chicago Police Department he was a Stationary Fireman.
Officer Carroll served in the Armed Forces, was a veteran of World War I and was Honorably Discharged. He was also a member of Feehan Council No. 749 Knights of Columbus. Officer Carroll was survived by his wife, Helen Mary (nee Barry), age 47 and children: Helen Mary, age 21, Jeannette, age 19, Margaret, age 16 and Thomas Joseph, III, age 19. He was preceded in death by his parents: Helen (nee Barry) and Thomas Joseph, Sr.
On February 20, 2008, Officer Carroll’s star was retired by Superintendent Jody P. Weis and enshrined in the Superintendent’s Honored Star Case, located in the lobby at Chicago Police Headquarters, 3510 South Michigan Avenue.
