The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation is very pleased to introduce Gold Star Families’ newest chairwoman, Maria Marmolejo.
As many of you know, the Gold Star Families is an organization that provides ongoing emotional support to family members of Chicago Police officers who have died in the line of duty. The Gold Star Families work hand in hand with the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation on a dual mission. That mission is to never forget fallen Chicago Police officers while also being there to support those who are left behind.
Maria and her three daughters became a Gold Star Family when their husband and father, Eduardo Marmolejo was killed in 2018 by an oncoming commuter train while he and his partner, Chicago Police officer Conrad Gary, were pursuing a shooting suspect on foot on Chicago’s South Side.
“It is my distinct honor to be able to lead an organization that has been so important to myself and my daughters as we’ve grieved the loss of Eduardo,” said Maria. “The last three years have been so challenging for us, but knowing we have an extended family in the Gold Star Families means we never felt alone and we always had someone to turn to when times got really difficult.
Maria succeeds Shelly Perez, who chaired Gold Star Families for two and a half years. We extend a heartfelt thanks to Shelly and her children for their commitment, dedication and compassion. The entire Perez family, with its unending enthusiasm, optimism and willingness to work hard in support of our mission truly embodies what being a Gold Star Family member is all about. Thank you Shelly, Benjamin Jr., Katarina and Rebecca for your friendship.
Maria Marmolejo will work to ensure that the Gold Star Families remain a trusted source of comfort, support and friendship to the hundreds of family members of fallen Chicago Police officers. Congratulations, Maria, we look forward to working with you and all the Gold Star Families to ensure the men and women who gave their lives to this city will never be forgotten.
